A million thoughts!
Initial planning and setting the first priorities

(3-06-2005)

Now that the decision has been made to go to Alaska a million thoughts pop into our heads. They are jumbled up, in no order and  more keep coming to the surface while some of the older thoughts are unknowingly forgotten.

We have managed to scribble some notes on paper, clip some articles from magazines and print some web information all of which we put in a newly created file folder.

Some people are extremely detail oriented making copious highly organized written plans to keep them on track. That is certainly not us!

As a matter fact we need to do a little better with planning and documentation. Hopefully the creation of this web site will force us to become better organized.

At the moment we are at our cottage in Cambridge, Wisconsin. I have not told you about our cottage yet and will get to that a little further down the page. It is a nice place to get away where it is easy to think clearly. Although the actual reason for being here is to check up on things it is also a good opportunity to concentrate on some planning.

I have also used part of this time to create the basic format of this web site and have started to add some pages to it. We are also taking advantage of this trip to visit local RV dealers to look at the possibility upgrading to a larger trailer. A larger trailer would certainly be more comfortable for our extended trip. More on the trailer as it develops.

Now back to the million thoughts. Our first thoughts focused on getting our home ready to sell and then what to do about a permanent residence for legal purposes. We had long talked about selling the cottage but the tax consequences were always a stumbling block. The cottage is OK to live in for a year or so but is just a little small for us to be comfortable in on a permanent basis.

Then the idea occured! Lets make the cottage our permanent residence
for the next two years. That will give us a home base and in two years
we can sell it with no tax consequences, assuming current tax law does
not change.

Not surprisingly the second thought is what we need to do to get our
home in Batavia IL ready to put on the market. We have lived there
for 27 years and the amount of STUFF we have collected is unbelievable! We knew this day would come and have been pecking away at getting rid of stuff but the remaining task still left seems insurmountable.

I know from experience that doing a little part of the job every day will eventually get the task completed.
