The best laid plans......

(6-20-2007)

As you can see from the date above it has been about two years since the last post to A Year In Alaska.com. It seems that our ability to predict time schedules is amiss.

Our original plans were to tidy up the house so it would be ready to sell, advertise it and have it sold in time to hit the road for Alaska in the summer of 2005 but by the time the fix up work was done the summer was over and we missed our time window.

We did get it on the market but by that time housing prices took big tumble and very few customers responded to our advertising. By this time were into the winter of 2006-2007.  Alas we gave up and decided to wait for the housing market to rebound.

Our plans also included making our Wisconsin cottage our residence while we were in Alaska.  After doing some research it was clear that this was not going to be a good financial decision.  Wisconsin has the highest income tax rate in the country. At present the cottage is on hold and if/when we do sell it we are considering a 1031 sale to avoid the tax implications.

In September our oldest son moved back in with us and has been keeping the house going. This allowed us to become snowbirds in the Southwest this winter (see our Southwest trip web pages) and now also allow us to finally make our departure to Alaska.

So now that we are finally following our dream vacation so lets get on with the show!
