A day in Glacier National Park
(7-3-2007)
Lou says,
We had been to Glacier National Park before so decided to visit there for only one day. The purpose of this trip was of course to see new and interesting places.
We were told the Many Glacier boat cruise was worth while and we had not taken it the last time. We might have considered seeing the Going to the Sun road again but it could only be driven 1/2 way from either direction because the road was washed out at the top and had not been repaired yet.
The boat cruise is actually two cruises in one. The first boat is boarded at Many Glacier Lodge and takes you across Swiftcurrent Lake where you hike about .2 miles to the second boat which then crosses Lake Josephine. From that point it is about a 1 mile hike to Grinell Lake. The trail is flat and a fairly easy walk to scenic Grinell Lake. I had not been hiking since we were in Arizona and was carrying about twenty five pounds of camera equipment so, for me, it was not that easy. Val also found it more tiring than she anticipated.
The trail winds through a pine forest, across a swaying suspension bridge, and past a small water fall before it ends at Grinell Lake. The view from the lake shore is pristine and Grinell falls on the other side of the lake is impressively large. The only regret I have is that we should have taken an early morning cruise. Our arrival in the late afternoon put the sun directly in your eyes when looking at Grinell Falls, Not good for taking photos!
The boats make several trips each day so you can spend time exploring and catch a later boat back to the lodge. Val suggested we wait for the very last evening boat in hopes of possibly seeing a bear on the shore line. There were no bears, however, we were very lucky to see a moose and her calf strolling in lakes shore line. The captain stopped the boat so the passengers, like us, could gawk and take photos.
