Making the wrong turn
(6-27-2007)

Lou says,

This is a story that all you RV'ers will appreciate. It is in fact two stories in one.

We were tired, it was late in the day and we missed the road we were supposed to have taken from Browing MT to East Glacier MT. About 10 miles later we realized our mistake. Looking at the map we had two options, back track to the right road which would be a 30 mile trek to East Glacier or take a short cut, local highway 49, which would be only 12 miles. Once we reached East Glacier we would then have to go another 17 miles to the RV park.

As you have probably guessed we decided to take the short cut. Not far along, signs warned the road was narrow and curvy, but we were committed because there was no place to turn around.  As it turns out the road was actually not that bad but it did indeed climb and twist through the mountains. To our pleasant surprise, at the highest point on the road, was a pull off large enough to park the truck and camper. The view was spectacular and the early evening sun was just about right for some nice photos. In the valley below was Lower Two Medicine Lake with mountains on the other side. As I was snapping photos at least three vintages busses called Jammers passed by as they were taking tourists on sight seeing trips. To our pleasure we had accidentally stumbled on to a local scenic road. (end of story number one)

We then continued on to East Glacier only to find our route blocked because a large truck had wedged itself under a low bridge. We managed to turn around and back track a couple of blocks to stop and ask if there was an alternate route that would take us to our destination campground. Unfortunately their was no alternate route but were told there was a campground across the street.  I looked across the street but saw no campground. Yes it is there I was told, just go into the gas station and ask I was told.  Now there were no signs anywhere that said anything about camping and nothing in any of our campground guides had it listed. So we went to the gas station and asked. Yes we have camping they said but most of our sites are rented for the season. As it turns out the campground was hidden behind the thick tall pine trees. The campground, gas station and store is owned and operated by two ladies, a mother and her daughter. They informed us that they do have four sites, with full hookups, that they use for daily rentals and if our rig would fit we could rent a site for $15 a night. With a little jockeying we managed to nestle our rig between and under several tall pine trees.  This was great find! It was right in town and across the street was a little local restaurant that has excellent food and great Huckleberry pies! And to top it all off we were in a Verizon digital service area where I could connect to the Internet. (end of story number 2)

It just goes to show that not all mistakes are disappointing and for those of you who think you would like to visit here the GPS coordinates are 48-26-54N 113-13-33W.
