Salmon Glacier
(July 27, 2007)
Lou says....

I takes about an hour to drive the 17 miles from Fish Creek to the 3700 foot summit  overlooking the glacier. The road is gravel or dirt with many pot holes so the going is slow but the panoramic view from the top is second only to that of Grand Canyon. (that's my opinion).

On our third trip to the summit we started up the road at 7:30 a.m. and when we arrived at the summit the sun was just rising above the mountain behind the glacier making perfect conditions for great photos. If you make the early morning trip I suggest you go directly to the summit and catch the other view points on the way back down.  On the way back down keep an eye out for Marmots sunning themselves on the rocks beside the road.

Salmon road is also used by gold and silver mining companies and if you are lucky you might catch a helicopter picking up/dropping off supplies or picking up workers from the road.

We did not have time to go beyond the summit but were told you can hike to the toe of the glacier if you know the way. When we were there a local resident was selling photos and books at the summit and he would be the one to ask directions.

Salmon Glacier is the fifth largest in Canada and well worth taking the time to visit.
