Whitehorse Yukon Territory, Canada
September 2, 2007)
Lou says....

My preconceived impression of Whitehorse was a town just like the others we had passed through in northern Canada only bigger.

In reality Whitehorse is quite modern and if you didn't know you were in the Yukon you would think you were still in the lower 48.

The Yukon River is Whitehorse's big attraction. Just adjacent to the town is the power plant and fish ladder. The fish ladder is a big tourist attraction and when the Salmon are running visitors can view them under the water through glass windows as they make their way up the ladder.   This is is the first fish ladder I have seen and didn't realize these ladders were provided to make it possible for fish to detour around the power plant and dam for their journey upriver.

We also did a little exploring and followed a local road along the the Yukon River which took us past the float plane area and up to an overlook with a view of Miles Canyon. The panoramic photo below was taken here.

One other interesting stop was a rest area south of Whitehorse where the Alaska Highway crosses the Yukon River. There you will see  one of the original Alaskan Highway log trussed bridges. It is kept in good repair because of its historical value.
