We're in Alaska!
(November 3, 2007)
Lou says....
Well....almost. If you have been to Alaska on the Alaska Highway the photo on the right should look familiar. In this photo Val is still in Canada and I am in Alaska. The border is in between us. No mountains here, just rolling hills and a clear cut swath in the trees where the border runs between the two countries.

Ahead of us is Tok, ninety three miles further up the Alaska Highway, and at this point our next destination is Fairbanks then Denali, but that will change as you will learn later.
As usual we don't make reservations ahead of time because we choose to scout the available possibilities once we arrive. Our scouting this time took us to Sourdough Campground in Tok. Sourdough Campground is not the typical parking lot camping we had been experiencing. It has plenty of trees, a wifi connection, and very large roomy sites. The amenities are great but probably the biggest attraction is the great hospitality and fantastic activities and entertainment. The new owners have gone out of their way to make Sourdough a destination stop for family fun. Be sure to read the captions in the photo album to learn the rest of the Sourdough story.
As I had mentioned earlier we planned to go to Fairbanks, do a little shopping, then go to Denali where we had reservations (yes reservations are recommended here) for a ten day stay. As Val was reading the many tourist pamphlets she collects she realized the Alaska State Fair was going to be on at the same time we planned to be in Denali.

Whoops! We wanted to go to the fair too! It was one of the events we had talked about seeing even before we left Illinois. With some quick juggling we managed to reschedule our arrival in Denali so we could go to the fair for a couple of days. So for the umpteenth time we were headed in a new direction! Our new route would take us down the Glenn Highway to Palmer and the State Fair.
We decided to make this leg a two day trip but extended it to three once we arrive at Tolsona Wilderness Campground 14 miles west of Glennallen. We had a nice wilderness site next to a meandering creek with great wifi and plenty of good photo ops. No entertainment here...just peace and quiet.
I don't know if I mentioned it before but we are members of the Escapees RV Club. Escapees has 50,000 plus members, owns many of their own campgrounds, and provides a host of services to their members. One of these services includes some members who volunteer to provide a place, usually their driveway, for other members to park their RV for an overnight stay. As luck would have it we were able to take advantage of this service and network with another Escapees member in Palmer. Our hosts, Dave and Betty, were very gracious and interesting people. We learned that Dave was quite a cook and planned to enter his favorite chocolate chip cookies in the baking contest at the state fair. (check out the state fair photo gallery to see how he placed) It is always great to find hospitality like this when away from home! Thanks Dave and Betty.
