Glacier cruise
(September 2007)
Lou says....

It's is great being able to avoid the tourist crowds by traveling in the off season. The draw back is the possibility of bad weather closing in. There was a hurricane force storm approaching the Gulf of Alaska but we were lucky and our cruise went without incident. The storm did arrive forcing cancellation of the last scheduled cruise of the season the next day.

Major Marine Tours offers both a one half and a full day cruise out of Seward.  We took the full day Kenai Fjords National Park cruise with a knowledgeable National Park Ranger on board to answer questions.

We departed at 11:45AM and our route took us through Resurection Bay and out into the Gulf of Alaska to Alalik Bay and the Alalik Glacier, the fartherest point on the trip. We arrived back in port at 7:45PM.

I have long been inspired by photos of calving glaciers and hoped to capture photos like that myself. I was not disappointed. In addition to some great wildlife images, which you can see in the photo album, I managed to get a sequence of photos of the Aliak Glacier calving. You can see a ten second video of these images here.
