We were told that fall in Alaska only lasted for two weeks. This year was definitely not typical as we enjoyed four weeks of the most brilliant and vibrant yellow and gold fall colors we have ever seen!
Like most places in Alaska only one road leads to and from the Kenai Peninsula. The Seward Highway, which some say is one of the most scenic highways in the country according to the Milepost, runs from Anchorage to Seward. The trip to Homer, via the Seward and Sterling highways, is about two hundred miles and along the route are spur roads that take you to places like Sunrise, Hope, Portage, Whittier and Kenai.
We made two trips down the Seward and Sterling highways. The first was made in mid September when the fall colors were in their very early stages. The foliage was green and lush with just a hint of yellow and gold. On the second trip, only ten days later, the colors had changed to a vibrant spectrum of yellow and gold with some greens. Most flowers were in their last stages of color but the few that were left afforded some great photo ops.
Two of my favorite stops were at the Canyon Creek overlook and the intersection of the Seward and Sterling highways.
In the photo album are two photos from Canyon River. The first shows the lush greens and the second the vibrant yellows and golds. The second also shows wide spread rain clouds with bright blue sky in between. It was raining on me as I took the rainbow photo but the sun was illuminating the brilliant fall colors in the distance. It was a breath taking view
The photo at the right was taken at the intersection of the Seward and Sterling Highways. The large pulloff is only accessible when traveling northbound but well worth taking the trouble to stop. There were still a few swans in Tern Lake which you can also see in the photo album.
Most visitors to Alaska come only in the Summer.......They don't know what they are missing!
