Lou says...

Have you ever taken a ride on the Ferris Wheel in the dead of winter? No, I haven't either, but I could have at the Fur Rendezvous Winter Carnival.  This year the event lasted one week instead of the usual two. Attendance had been dwindling and the change to one week was a big success.

Some of the activities this year included, carnival rides, fur auctions,
World Championship Sled Dog Race, ice bowling, a parade, a native arts and craft show, outdoor hockey, snowshoe softball, ice carving, snow sculptures, dog sled rides, a photography contest, fireworks, a melodrama and a new event, Running With the Reindeer, which is similar to Running of the Bulls in Spain.

The temperature ranged from the teens to upper twenties but we bundled up, just like Alaskans, and went to see the fun.  Judging from the crowds, Running with the Reindeer was the most popular event. Many thought the event was hokey and articles in the newspaper questioned the wisdom of the organizers. Fortunately there were no mishaps and the event was a big hit. Unfortunately the crowds were so large I was not able to find a spot to take good pictures.

The dog sled races offered better photo opportunities. The race route is twenty two miles long and each musher runs the coarse once a day for three days. The best cumulative time wins the race. We went to a different location along the coarse each of the three days and thoroughly enjoyed our first ever dog sled race.

Fur Rondy was a great experience and fulfilled our desire to attend a winter carnival.
