Whale watching - Seward AK
Lou says....

As many as twenty thousand Gray Whales migrate from the Baha to the Bering Sea every year in April and May.  The migration this year was a little late but we decided to take advantage of a special promotion for a whale watching cruise and go to Seward again see Gray Whales.

The promotion included an overnight stay at the Holiday Inn Express and cruise with Renown Tours. We had the The Great Alaskan Tour Saver, two for one coupon book, (recommended for anyone who tours in Alaska) and decided to use one of the coupons to take a second cruise with Kenai Fiords Tours.

We had great weather for both cruises but unfortunately not one of the twenty thousand Gray Whales came to the party! We did see some Humpback whales and Orcas on both cruises.

All of the whale watching cruises take much the same route and we saw many of the same sights as our cruise last fall.  The one exception was on the Renown cruise.  The captain made a swing through scenic Thumb Cove with its tall mountains and hanging glaciers.

If you plan to take a cruise out of Seward I would recommend Renown Tours. The Renown cruise was leisurely, spending more time at interesting places allowing us time to really enjoy the sights. The Kenai Fiords cruise covered more distance in the same amount of time. As a result the pace was hurried and never gave me enough time to really enjoy the sights or compose decent photographs.

When in Alaska be sure to visit Seward, it is our favorite town on the Kenai.
