Glacier Hiking
Lou says....

There is no better way of experiencing Alaska than going into the wilderness and hoofing it. The Matanuska Glacier certainly qualifies as wilderness and hiking on it is something anyone can do!

This glacier is about 100 miles from anchorage on the Glenn Highway and is the largest Alaskan glacier you can drive to, park, and walk only a few hundred feet to be on it. Once on the glacier you get the feeling you have just been transported to an alien planet with a stark dramatic landscape!

Some parts of the of the glacier can be hiked saftely wearing ordinary hiking boots but to be safe hiking the more scenic parts of the glacier you need to strap crampons to your hiking boots.  There are tour companies who provide crampons as part of a group tour or you can rent them from AMH in Anchorage.

I spent three days hiking the glacier with professional photographers who sponsor a group photography workshop every year. They are experienced glacier hikers and provided valuable instruction on glacier hiking techniques and photography.  If you are interested here is a link to more information.

The glacier is ever changing and year to year or even day to day you can see changes to its landscape.  If you are patient and do a little exploring you will be able to see ice caves, glacial lakes, deep crevices, rivers of water that cut deep gorges in the ice and many, many more unique and dramatic ice formations.
